TDoS are very happy to announce that we won two awards at the CSIE ceremony in London. TDoS was assigned the Innovation Award for the design of the funnel of Norwegian Prima, and our Executive Director and partner Fredrik Johansson won the Leadership Award.
The funnel design of the Norwegian Prima was planned to be something never seen before.
This curvilinear, modern and unique funnel was created as a standout feature atop the 965ft ship that would serve the function of directing fumes out from the uppermost deck. With its sculptural curves in semi-transparent panels and aluminum, the funnel is an eye-catching architectural piece of art that is far removed from the hard angles of traditional cruise ship funnels.
One of the unique challenges of the design was to integrate the Prima Speedway, a 1,378ft, three-deck race track with 14 turns that leads racers around the ship’s funnel at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. Taking inspiration from the Yas Marina F1 Circuit, Abu Dhabi’s Formula 1 race track at the W Abu Dhabi Yas Island hotel, TDoS designed the funnel structure so as to be flipped over the track, thus creating an unforgettable moment for racers passing at full speed beneath the dynamic shape. This innovative and algorithmic design will be repeated on all six Norwegian Cruise Line Prima Class ships.
